Nearly 150 neighbors from across District 2 and beyond joined us on Saturday, January 5th to make their voices heard by weighing in on our three starting priorities to strengthen Oakland in the first 100 days and first year of my term. Below are the main needs, hopes, ideas, and questions that people shared in groups.

I can’t help feeling that my inauguration to the Oakland City Council—and that of a new generation of progressive women of color across the country—is a good sign of which way the wind is blowing.

On December 11th, the election results were certified. The final tally showed that our campaign won by a decisive 14 points and nearly 3,000 votes.

After Election Day, we awake with a new hope for Oakland. Mutual congratulations are in order; this is our victory for our community, our city, and our movement.

We’ve got a week to win. And it’s close. Very close. We need every single vote. But the only way we can cross the finish line ahead is with your help. The incumbent has corporate and developer money, but I’ve got you.

Maybe you’ve seen it. A 70-foot "Vote Nikki" mural has popped up on East 12th Street & 13th Avenue, just a few blocks from one of Oakland’s many homeless encampments.

When my partner Daniel and I hosted Nikki and our neighbors in our home, our 6-year-old Kaya made a colorful sign with Nikki's name on it. Underneath, she drew these rainbow shapes.

My heart is breaking for our homeless neighbors and for the City we love. Thirty-seven more residents are now without shelter because of the tragic fire in East Oakland. [1] Our City Council has failed to act with compassion or competence in dealing with this crisis. They plan to evict 100 people living in tents at Lake Merritt while offering our homeless neighbors nowhere to go. [2] I know you share my deep concern. I cannot express how urgent it is that we come together and talk to voters this Sunday about the REAL, compassionate solutions we have at our fingertips. People have nowhere to go, and it’s up to us to make those solutions happen because the current City Council is unable or unwilling to act.
