What does it mean to NIKKI to be down for the town?

For me right now, being down for the town means stepping up my own leadership to serve my home town. I am honored and excited at the prospect of representing District 2 on the Oakland City Council and to champion the important issues affecting our city. We need: housing for all, good jobs and a thriving economy, real community safety and equitable neighborhood services. Being Down for the Town means being a champion - really listening, bringing people together, and having the courage to stand up and fight for real solutions.

District 2 is home to very diverse neighborhoods with distinct views and needs. We embrace our love of Oakland and know that this diversity makes us stronger. Being down for the district means fighting for all of our neighborhoods. It means that all of our neighbors have safe streets and sidewalks, adequate lighting and trash pickup. It means ensuring affordable rents for residents, small businesses, nonprofits and artists. It's about finding solutions to our homelessness crisis together with homeless neighbors and advocates. It’s honoring art and culture in our district by investing dollars in important resources like the Oakland Black Arts Movement Business District, Oakland Asian Cultural Center and Eastside Arts Alliance. And, it’s making sure that our neighbors have a real voice in decisions that impact our lives such as the use of public land and major developments.

I’m running for City Council to bring bold, innovative and proactive leadership to make Oakland work for all of us. And, I’m running with Team Down for the Town to build the strength and stamina to win the election in November and to make change in Oakland for the long haul.

Here’s how you can support NIKKI and Team Down for the Town:

1. Donate to Nikki’s campaign - Our goal is to raise at least $2,620 for the 26.2 miles we will run together. Can you donate $1, $2, $5 or $10 for each mile we run - $26, $52, $130 or $260? 
2. Like Nikki‘s Facebook page and invite your friends to like it.
3. Volunteer on race day (Sunday, March 25, 7am - 2pm) to cheer us on, take photos and give us water! Then celebrate at a community picnic 1 - 2pm near the playground next to the start line, look for the blue and green balloons.
