This morning, the US Supreme Court ruled on the wrong side of history and with billionaire CEOs trying to take away the rights of workers to organize into unions. The ruling on Janus v. AFSCME overturns 40 years of precedent and will allow public sector workers to benefit from the protections of a union without having to pay “fair share fees”. This is an attack on working people everywhere and an attempt by the Right to further dismantle our unions and our voice on the job.
Strong unions make strong communities by providing good paying jobs and benefits that allow people to invest back into their community. For years, I have worked alongside my sisters and brothers in the labor movement to fight for better pay, benefits, and protections for workers that lift up our entire community. As your next City Councilmember for District 2, I will be an advocate for workers because I know that good local jobs grow our local economy.
You can view my community-driven platform here. My platform is deeply rooted in my values as an organizer and as a true progressive. We have an opportunity to change politics as usual in Oakland and create a new narrative and agenda that prioritizes the needs of all of Oakland not just the few. Click here to help me make that happen by contributing to my campaign.
Today makes me even more proud to share my latest endorsements - IFPTE Local 21 and ATU Local 1555 - who join SEIU Local 1021, California Nurses Association, DC16 Painters & Allied Trades , UNITE HERE! 2850 & community organizations in my campaign to fight for working people and an Oakland for all of us!
Together we will create change in Oakland and across the country.
PS - Show your unity with working people across the nation by holding up signs with a simple message: UNION and posting photos or videos on social media using the hashtags: #Union and #WeRise. For more details go to americaneedsunions.org.
